Evidence, Insights & Inspiring Ways Forward

Pulling together wisdom and intelligence from across GM to tackle our biggest challenges.

What are we learning about growing a culture of prevention for Live Well?

Our newly published report draws on insights and ideas from public and voluntary sector leaders working across Greater Manchester to focus on what we are learning about growing a culture of prevention for Live Well.

The report, identifies four GM system enablers that need support and nourishment:

● Trust in communities and their leadership of change
● Equal working partnerships between voluntary and statutory services
● Cross-sector teams working across boundaries
● Collaborative leadership reaching across neighbourhoods, towns, and cities

It goes on to identify four emerging opportunity areas that will help to tackle barriers and reduce inequalities:

1. Leading together, through collaborative leadership and participatory governance

2. More than meetings, including new ways of working, diverse roles and partnerships, and the development of joint practice models

3. A joint response to regulation that involves shared outcomes and accountability, shared management of risk and data sharing

4. Authentic co-production that recognises and amplifies the lived experience of people and communities, using collaborative, evidence-based processes and frameworks

When leaders are trying to shift systems, they often encounter common barriers and try exciting approaches to overcome them. We run webinars to deep dive into these ways of doing and thinking as part of the GoodLives GM System Shifting Leadership Collaborative. They serve as provocations, rooted in work happening across Greater Manchester, and they are open to everyone.

When big themes emerge across all of the work of GoodLives GM and beyond, we surface new insights to push thinking and practice. We pull together the wisdom and ideas held by leaders to find inspiring ways forward.

Live Well – new ways of working in a culture of prevention

Live Well Accelerator Sites are leading ambitious work to name and tackle the core barriers to Live Well. Working in cross-sector alliances, they are innovating bold new ways of working with communities to tackle their most complex challenges. Their work provides fresh insight on the new ways of working that characterise a culture of prevention.

In collaboration with these leaders and partners across GM, we distilled the core benefits of working in this way – highlighting practice for growing Live Well alliances across every GM neighbourhood.

Growing Live Well – The UK evidence for community power

Live Well has the potential to bring GM communities and public services together in powerful ways to put communities in the lead of change in their neighbourhoods. For Greater Manchester, like many other parts of the UK, community power charts a new and hopefully direction – and already has a number of shining examples of where this is taking place and reducing inequalities.

However, many leaders of this work feel they can’t demonstrate the true impact of this work and, therefore, make the case for more of it.

We assembled the UK evidence base for community power. This Evidence Map highlights the impact for people, places and public services, and shows where it is already happening in Greater Manchester.

What does an Early Family Help system look like?

Between November 2023 and March 2024, four GM Early Family Help Trailblazer sites, Salford, Stockport, Rochdale and Wigan, undertook work to understand what it takes to develop community-led, preventative Early Family Help models in practice.

We co-developed a blueprint that captures this learning, describing what a community-led, connected Early Family Help system looks like and the core features required to bring it to life. It is connected to bright spots, tools, and approaches tested and developed in the Trailblazer work, to allow you to use it in the best way that works for your needs.

GoodLives GM Frameworks & Approaches

To guide our work and make sense of what we’re learning, we use our frameworks at the heart of GoodLives GM. These include barriers to system shifting work, and the Compass and ‘Look Fors’ that identify the features of an enabling system.
